Michelin Guide Features Charlotte Asian Restaurants

CHARLOTTE, NC—The MICHELIN Guide American South 2025 has launched, and Charlotte has three Asian restaurants featured in the inaugural guide. 

Lang Van received a Bib Gourmand, which is awarded for good quality and good value cooking, and both PrimeFish and Omakase Experience by PrimeFish received listings in the guide. (Contemporary American restuarant Counter was Charlotte’s first restaurant to receive a Michelin star.)

MICHELIN Guide Inspectors dined at restaurants in various cities in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. (They also tasted in Atlanta, though the Michelin Guide had already expanded there in 2023.)

The prestigious list of MICHELIN-starred restaurants began with the advent of car travel, when hungry motorists in France benefited from recommendations for the new places they visited. 

MICHELIN inspectors visit restaurants anonymously and look for five criteria, the company says. 

Per a press release, they include:

  • quality products
  • the harmony of flavors
  • the mastery of cooking techniques
  • the voice and personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine
  • consistency between each visit and throughout the menu. 
     

Each restaurant is inspected several times a year.

Lang Van
The husband and wife team of Tuyen Tran and Dan Nguyen have been at the helm of Charlotte's venerable Vietnamese restaurant since 1999. Dan's warm hospitality, the extensive menu of Vietnamese favorites such as pho, spring rolls, hot pot, and classic vermicelli noodles keep diners coming back year after year.

PrimeFish
Chef/owner Robin Anthony opened PrimeFish in 2020 and sources quality from around the world, buying prime salmon from Denmark and directly from Tokyo's famed Toyosu market. PrimeFish had already won numerous local awards before being recognized by the Michelin Guide.

Omakase Experience by PrimeFish
Chef Robin Anthony is the driving force behind this ambitious six-seat counter, located just a hop away from its larger, more casual sibling. Omakase Experience by PrimeFish specializes in traditional Edomae (Tokyo style) sushi, combining French and southern influence. Chef Robin is also a Certified Sake Adviser and intricately pairs fish with sake that elevates his guests’ culinary experience.
