CHARLOTTE, NC—Texas-based, Japanese-inspired restaurants Uchi and Uchibā open this weekend at Commonwealth Plaza Midwood, a live-work-play development on Commonwealth Avenue. Uchi opens on Wednesday, April 1, and Uchibā opens on Friday, April 3. Inspired by the intimacy of the sushi bar, Uchi blends Japanese tradition with modern creativity, including omakase tastings, hot and cold bites, and seasonal daily specials.
Upstairs, Uchibā (which means “Uchi Bar”) offers grilled yakitori, small plates, and Uchi favorites alongside an extensive list of Japanese whiskies and craft cocktails. Uchibā has a more casual izakaya-style environment than Uchi. Izakaya is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks, somewhat like a Spanish tapas bar. Weather-permitting, Uchibā also has an outdoor patio with views of the uptown skyline.
Reservations are recommended for both restaurants, and diners are encouraged to book well in advance, or book early times (4:00 p.m.) or late (9:00 p.m.–), as the initial interest level has both restuarants booked solid during peak hours.
Shaun King is the chef de cuisine, and Taylor Carson is the head sushi chef. Founded by James Beard Award–winning chef Tyson Cole, Uchi takes its name from the Japanese word for “home,” reflecting the warmth and connection at the heart of the experience.
