Learn2Earn promotes digital literacy
CHARLOTTE, NC—The Asian American Foundation for the Carolinas* (AAFC) recently hosted a gathering for 25 recent participants in the City of Charlotte’s Learn2Earn Digital Literacy Program. The graduates represent two refugee communities in the Charlotte area, and range in age from teenagers to seniors. Through determination and hard work, they completed digital literacy training designed to help them navigate today's increasingly technology-driven world with greater confidence and independence.
The City of Charlotte promotes digital inclusion as part of its efforts to enhance upward mobility. During a presentation to the City Council in February 2023, city staff outlined a multi-phased strategy aimed at reducing the digital divide in Charlotte.
Central Piedmont Community College provides instruction and guidance to our participants. Classes continue through the early fall, and a formal ceremony for all graduates will be held in October. Additional support is being provided by the Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the Cambodian Legacy Project.
The first two phases of Charlotte’s initiative are being conducted in partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and the Center for Digital Equity. The initiative, called the Learn2Earn program, is designed to provide residents with the chance to earn a new device while developing job-related skills.
