In addition to the traditional celebrations held by such longstanding organizations as the Chinese American Association and the Vietnamese Association of Charlotte, Lunar New Year events are showing up in a wide variety of venues. Lunar New Year begins on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has three Lunar New Year events on its calendar. Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. is hosting an event. The Mint Museum Uptown is holding a multicultural event that features a Lunar New Year lion dance performance, followed by Casa de la Cultura Afro Latin/x dance and narrative, and tributes to Black American Music. And local breweries Resident Culture Brewing and Devil's Logic either held or are holding events to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The busiest group is the Queen City Lion Dance group, which is performing lion dances throughout the greater Charlotte area, from Mooresville down to Tega Cay, S.C. The biggest events are still those of the Chinese and Vietnamese associations, but the growth in Lunar New Year events is an indication of the growing Asian cultural influences in the greater Charlotte area.
