ASHEVILLE, NC—Chef-restaurateur Meherwan Irani’s Chai Pani (which means “tea and water”) is moving from downtown Asheville to the center of South Slope in the building that most recently housed Buxton Hall Barbecue. The "2022 James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurant" and Asheville favorite will have more kitchen space and seating at the two-story 1920s brick building—which was once Asheville’s Black skating rink. Opened in 2009, Chai Pani features chaat — crunchy, spicy, sweet, tangy, brightly flavored Indian street snacks. It also serves thalis, traditional family meals that highlight India’s vast culinary diversity. As soon as the new location is up and running, work will begin to transition Chai Pani to Irani’s Botiwalla concept. Botiwalla also has locations in Charlotte (Optimist Hall) and Atlanta.
